The
Goldfields Land and Sea Council (GLSC) is an association of Aboriginal people from
Western Australia's Goldfields region. It was established in 1984 as the peak
Aboriginal land and heritage body in the region.
The GLSC is the Federal Government-appointed Representative Body for native title in the Goldfields.
It enjoys widespread support from throughout the region, including Aboriginal communities, organisations and individuals.
There are approximately 3,100 Aboriginal people (1996) in the Goldfields, many of whom live in the major centres. The people represented by the GLSC are geographically dispersed, and culturally diverse. They include the Tjupan people as far north as Wiluna, to the Bullenbuk claimants of the Esperance and south coastal region.GLSC membership is open to Aboriginal people who are ordinarily resident in the area or who are traditional owners or holders of native title.
On behalf of all of its members, the GLSC provides
strong and innovative leadership on the many issues
which are shaping the development of their lives and
their communities, particularly in securing native title
rights to their traditional lands. The GLSC is very
mindful of the importance of these lands to members'
spiritual, cultural and economic well-being.
