New 'old' Chairman elected at AGM

Yesterday’s GLSC annual general meeting in Kalgoorlie-Boulder saw one new and one ‘old’ face elected to the Governing Committee.

Former chairman Ian Tucker was returned as GLSC Chairman and new face Christine Donaldson was elected to fill a casual vacancy in the 13-person Governing Committee.

Mr Tucker previously led the Goldfields Land and Sea Council from 1999 to 2006.

After his election Mr Tucker acknowledged the GLSC’s standing as one of the nation’s most highly regarded Aboriginal corporations and indicated that continuing the GLSC’s strong representation of Aboriginal people’s rights and interests will be his priority.

“We have rights that flow from many directions, including State, Commonwealth and international laws, and we must ensure that these rights are upheld so that our people can advance socially and economically.

“Our native title rights are foremost and we will continue to pursue success in this area for the many claims that our people have across the entire Goldfields-Esperance region,” Mr Tucker said.

Mr Tucker, a councillor with Menzies Shire and Chairman of the Menzies Aboriginal Corporation replaces Brian Champion Jnr who had held the position in an interim capacity for the past year. Mr Champion now resumes his position as a regular member of the Governing Committee.

The GLSC Governing Committee now comprises Ian Tucker (Chairman), Fabian Tucker, Elaine Bourne, Brian Champion Jnr, Duncan Bilson, Christine Donaldson, Laurence Thomas, Janice Tamwoy, Allan Bonney, Betty Logan, Cyril Barnes, Ricky Dimer and James Murphy. Next year’s annual general meeting will see elections for all 13 positions on the Governing Committee (every two years).
