Claimants to get explanation of historic Wongatha decision

The GLSC will explain the Federal Court’s Wongatha judgement to claimants it represents at a special meeting to be convened soon after the judgement is delivered in Kalgoorlie next Monday.

Federal Court Judge Kevin Lindgren will hand down his judgement at the WMC Auditorium ( 44 MacDonald Street ) next Monday 5th February at 10.15am, with video links to Federal Court premises in both Perth and Sydney .

The meeting of Wongatha, Mantjintjarra Ngalia, Koara and Wutha claimants will also be at the WMC Auditorium in Kalgoorlie . Claimants will receive a preliminary assessment and explanation of the judgement from GLSC solicitors. Depending on how long delivery of the judgement takes, the meeting of claimants is planned to commence early on Monday afternoon.

The 160,000km2 Wongatha claim in the northern Goldfields was first registered in 1999. Federal Court hearings for the Wongatha and seven overlapping claims commenced five years ago (February 19, 2002) and ran until early 2004. About 90 witnesses provided evidence of strong on-going rights and interests in their traditional land.
